Stressed Out: twenty one pilots’ “Blurryface” is now the most streamed album by a group in music history

When it comes to bands with albums that are dominating streaming services, who do you think the biggest numbers belong to? A cursory look at the data isn’t so shocking. “High Hopes”, Panic! At The Disco’s biggest single to date, has racked up almost 600 million streams, while some of the biggest tracks in modern rock of the last 20 years are up there, as well. Linkin Park’s “In The End” is almost at the 600 million Spotify stream milestone as well, and Disturbed’s “Down With The Sickness” is at 275 million Spotify streams. These numbers aren’t really that much of a surprise.

However, when it comes to the most streamed album on Spotify by a group in the service’s history, it’s none of the above groups (although we imagine that, especially Linkin Park and Panic!, are near the top) that reign supreme. No, twenty one pilots’ 2015 album Blurryface is officially the record holder – at least for now, according to Chart Data. With “Stressed Out” already reaching over 1 billion streams on Spotify, these numbers don’t even take into account Youtube views, or other streaming services like Apple Music.

Whatever you may think of twenty one pilots, you have to remember that the album was released in a sort of “perfect storm” timeframe. Spotify was beginning to hit its peak, the duo were beginning to gain much of their current fanbase (cultivated from years of slugging it out in clubs), and many songs on the record made their way to just about everyone’s playlists. This brings the question – what other pop-punk, rock, and metal albums are killing it on Spotify? Perhaps that’s a question we’ll soon be able to answer.
