Canada’s Softcult manage to create beautiful music with an important message behind it – always. Blending a variety of genres (’90s alt-rock, shoegaze, dream pop, grunge, and so many more), they’re fast becoming one of the most exciting bands around right now, especially for guitar-based music, but also music in general. Even from a lyrical perspective, they’re able to convey simple messages with important truths.
The band’s new single, “Dress”, continues their hot streak. Managing to inject huge pop hooks into harrowing subject matter is not an easy thing at all, yet Softcult manages to pull it off quite easily.
As the band explains: “This song is about consent; it’s about saying ‘no’ and having it happen to you anyway. It’s about being followed while walking alone at night or being cornered in a bar when we’re just trying to have a night out with our friends. It’s about the lingering fear and trauma that haunts us long after these experiences have happened. It’s about how these experiences make us feel powerless and change the way we see ourselves.”
