Not even 48 hours have passed since Sleep Token’s new single “The Summoning” dropped on YouTube with a striking video, and the video for it has already racked 335k views. It’s also trending at #42 on all of YouTube right now, and once you listen to the track, you’ll soon figure out why. I mean, it’s pretty clear that Sleep Token are a band that will do whatever they like, but the new song is a complete mindfuck even for them.
The first four(ish) minutes of the song plays like some of the band’s heaviest material, though the choruses balance that out. Think “Gods” or the punch of songs like “The Offering”. On the other hand (and this is partially why the song is trending so hard right off the bat), the last two minutes of the song morph into a really interesting…R&B // funk hybrid? Yes, seriously. It’s hard to explain, but it sounds really cool, and this fresh injection of seemingly disparate styles just seems to work for the band. Let’s be real here, though. Sleep Token is getting more difficult by the day to label under any singular genre banner.
