Bands and musicians who treat their music and aesthetic with the utmost care are also usually the ones who are blazing their own trails through the music scene, not merely following trends. On new single “Northern Fires (Guernica)”, Silent Planet cements themselves as a rare metalcore band who are leading the charge with poignant lyricism and interesting song structures that don’t always follow a structure.
The lyrics, which depict the Spanish Civil War, are carried out with the utmost conviction by vocalists Garrett Russell and Thomas Freckleton, while the musicianship is top-notch and interesting, too. The band does operate within the framework of post-hardcore and metalcore, but manage to deliver on the promise of continued forward-thinking mindsets. It’s all very impressive for the band, who not long ago were opening small tours for bands that aren’t even really around anymore. Persistence pays off – and it’s even easier when, alongside bands like Dayseeker and Ghost Key, you’re setting the bar high for modern metalcore and hardcore.
