Kansas City Chiefs tight end Sean Culkin is the first NFL player to convert his entire salary to Bitcoin

Currently vying for a backup spot behind star tight end Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs TE Sean Culkin has seen plenty in his time in the league. An undrafted free agent who went to high school at Indian Rocks Christian in Largo, Florida, the former Missouri product – who graduated from the college with a Bachelor’s in Finance – is taking an unprecedented step when it comes to his financial proclivities.

In a statement shared with The Block, Culkin had this to say:

“Considering my career — particularly its physical demands, and brevity – it makes the most logical sense to be paid in sound money that I believe protects its purchasing power over time. From a macro standpoint, I believe we are in the beginning stage of Bitcoin’s shift away from being extremely speculative, to a legitimate asset class viewed as a store of value.”

Athletes investing in cryptocurrency is a fairly new thing. Offensive tackle Russell Okung converted half his paycheck to Bitcoin at the end of last year, amounting to a tidy $6.5 million worth of the cryptocurrency. And members of the Brooklyn Nets and New York Yankees are following suit, too. Pretty neat stuff. And for those following, that’s around $920,000 if he makes the team for the upcoming season.
