Róisín Murphy Brings Stylish Pop to the Riviera

By Colette Custin

Irish pop mainstay Roisin Murphy hit the Uptown neighborhood on Tuesday night, bringing an entire closet of beats, looks, and vibes to an enthusiastic crowd at the Riv.

Opening with “Pure Pleasure Seeker” (one of a a few tunes she played from former band Moloko), Murphy strutted and preened, turning the stage into a runway with a series of outfits that felt right at home with the bright, danceable beats of tunes like “Dear Miami” and “You Knew.”

Dropping into the pit to connect with fans for “The Time is Now,” Murphy’s style of electronic, disco-y pop feels right in line with her contemporaries, at times calling to mind early Lady Gaga or the more recent releases by Robyn. Her live band accentuated the bombastic style of tunes like “Overpowered,” and Murphy’s rapport with the crowd showed what a powerful force she is in the current art-pop scene.
