Rising ambient post-metalcore band Stillnight release new album ‘Dream State’, discuss favorite video game soundtracks

Ambient post-metalcore band Stillnight haven’t been on the scene for too long, but they’re already making waves. Their sound combines ambient influences with more traditional progressive metalcore sound structures, making for an interesting listen. And their new album Dream State, encapsulates all they’re trying to do quite well. The album is out today, so give it a spin!

We’ve also brought in all the members of the band to discuss a few of their favorite video game soundtracks, which you can check out below. Halo? Halo. Halooooooooo.

Tony:

My favorite video game soundtrack is from Doom Eternal. Mick Gordon seamlessly combined dark electronic elements with the heaviness from modern metal in a way nobody has done before. Doom is fast-paced, unrelenting, and the music matches perfectly.

Kody:

I’d have to say my favorites are the Halo 1-3 (including ODST and Reach) soundtracks and the Doom Eternal soundtrack. The Halo soundtracks are just so catchy, thematic, and full of drama which makes for a fun and intense atmosphere when playing. On the other hand, the Doom Eternal soundtrack is cutting edge, defiant, and extremely intense. Mick Gordon did an amazingly ridiculous job with blending so many different elements, instruments, and compositions to make those songs sound the way they do. Both of those game series have some of the most amazing compositions and Mick Gordon, Martin O’Donnell, & Michael Salvatori are some of the most intense producers I’ve come across in my years of gaming.

Danny:

This was a tough one for me, as I’m not a frequent gamer currently and the soundtracks that stand out to me from my past aren’t favorites as a whole, but I’d probably go with the Black Ops: Zombies soundtrack. That decision is based on memories playing the game and loving the music and I enjoy pretty much everything off of the entire collection. It also still holds up to this day, some of the lyrics are fantastic, and it has a great combination of creepy atmospheric tunes and upbeat dancy ones. Honorable mention goes to the Resident Evil games, as I absolutely love how almost all of the original games were composed and loved the unnerving, yet peaceful vibe they bring.
