Lambs Like Lions are a 3 piece Christian Noisecore outfit hailing from the Swan City (Lakeland, FL). I have heard of this band in the local scene for over a year now, shortly after they emerged on the scene in late 2012. Unfortunately I have yet had the chance to see them live or listen to anything. All I can tell you is after my first spin of their self titled EP my mind was simply blown away. Right off the bat they remind me of La Dispute with alot of yelling and very raw/ pure emotion. The emotion was not only in vocalists Joshua Bowlby’s voice, but the instruments where alive with raw emotion as well.
The first track on their EP is an intro entitled “lifeless”. The drums start off pounding heavily about 15 seconds in giving off a vibe that strongly reminds me of The Chariot (one of the bands influences). It really start to pick up up 39 seconds when the vocals and the raw energy kicks in. I wouldn’t necessarily consider this an intro, it makes for a damn good song to build up the rest of the EP. Next up is “Dust” starting of with a bang, which is pretty much consistent with the rest of the EP. The lyrics in this song really hit home for me personally, “You are the dust underneath my feet Whispering every sinful thought while I sleep Instigator, Liar, Murderer I will not be broken by your words”.
Following “Dust” is “Unworthy”. Hands down this is my favorite track on the EP. IT flows perfectly (more than the other songs) and has a great bounce to fast pace transition that had me jumping in my computer chair. Second to last on the EP is “Afraid” with a slow and melancholic opening. The first 40 seconds really builds up the song for a great overall composition. This song strongly reminds me of La Dispute (another influence of the band). I’m a huge La Dispute fan so I totally dig it.But, even if you are not, the band is not ripping off the sound, but simply you can tell the influence with an added great twist. Last but not least comes “The Glory” with its abrasive pull. The songs builds up and is one of the more semi melodic tracks on the EP, but not narrowing away from the key sound that makes up LLL.
To end this review all I can say is I have found a new favorite local and I am seriously expecting to see alot from this band in the future. Their passion and raw sound they put out is unreal. I’m going on three hours of listening to the EP non stop and don’t plan on stopping. Be sure to give it a listen and check it out.
