Punk and ‘70s glam rock collided with fantastic results on Saturday night at Reggie’s, as Lee Ving’s current incarnation of FEAR headlined a bill with Baltimore’s War on Women and modern-day legends Giuda.
War on Women delivered a stellar set of aggressive but hooky punk, and frontwoman Shawna Potter was so full of Riot-Grrl energy that she could barely contain it, making for an energetic set and a solid bookend to the night’s headliner—the mighty FEAR, fronted all these years later by Lee Ving, who led a strong lineup through classics like “Let’s Have a War” and “Foreign Policy.”
But it was Italian glam-rock throwbacks Giuda who owned the Reggie’s stage for forty solid minutes of sing-along hooks and guitar work that called to mind the best of their influences from AC/DC to Slade. Every Giuda song is an anthem designed to drive the audience’s adrenalin through the roof in a celebration of all things rock n’roll, and tunes like new single “Louder Than Action” with its infectious guitar hook and “Wild Tiger Woman” from 2013 LP Let’s Do It Again were highlights in a set filled with nothing-but.
Frontman Ntenda Damas has more energy than ten other frontmen combined, and Giuda’s rhythm section is tightest than some stadium rockers can lay claim to. One of the best rock bands out there, it’s a rare treat when Giuda comes to town – here’s hoping they make it back to Chicago sooner than later!
