102.9 Jacksonville’s New Alternative station is bringing their sixth annual “The Big Ticket” music festival back for another ride. This year’s lineup is bringing in some of the brightest up and comers in the alternative music scene. Featuring the likes of Walk The Moon, Saint Motel, and Glass Animals, as well as established co-headliners in Twenty One Pilots and Of Monsters And Men, the event will take place on Sunday December 6th, at Metropolitan Park in Jacksonville, Florida. One writer put together their list of the top 5 “must-watch” bands of this year’s The Big Ticket festival. You can view their list after the jump.
–
1)Pvris – Having seen them play to 200 cap crowds when they were still opening tours just last year, it’s safe to say PVRIS has blown up in 2015. With a slow burning debut album in ‘White Noise’ that’s had around a year to get listeners hooked, the band is now doing the unthinkable – heading out as openers for Fall Out Boy and AwolNation. The sky is the limit for the band, who played to massive crowds on Warped Tour, and are set to hit the stage at The Big Ticket. Don’t miss Lynn Gunn’s vocals – catch the band before they play much larger stages, and you certainly won’t regret it.
2)Twenty One Pilots – Normally when I write up previews for any event, i generally don’t like to focus on talking about the headliner(s). Because let’s face it, chances are you are going to watch them whether I mention them or not. But in this particular case, it’s just flat out impossible to not do so. I remember discovering these guys in a small bar/venue in Orlando back in Nov, 2012. I was only going because a friend offered me a ticket, so I went with basically no expectations whatsoever. But I can undoubtedly say that I had never been so impressed by a band I had never heard of previously. Two days later i saw them as the opening band at the Next Big Thing festival in St Pete, but from the way they handled themselves and the crowd, they practically performed like headliners. And now only three short years later, they’ve blown up expectedly and are back as the actual headliners for this year’s Big Ticket festival. And deservedly so.
3)Mutemath – I feel as if Mutemath are one of those bands that you need to experience live to be able to fully comprehend and appreciate what exactly it is they do. My absolute favorite thing about seeing the band live will always be getting to watch Darren King play, as he is undoubtedly one of the most energetic and fun drummers to see live. One of the most criminally underrated bands to come out of the 21st century, Mutemath are a must-watch band at this year’s Big Ticket festival.
4)Of Monsters And Men – Hailing from Iceland, Of Monsters And Men had for the longest time been one of those bands that I’d heard on several occasions, but never really knew who I was listening to. I finally got the chance to see them live also on the 2012 Next Big Thing festival, and I was left just absolutely mesmerized by them. The harmony between singer/guitarists Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar Þórhallsson is impeccable and immaculate. I highly recommend you not skip out on them at this year’s Big Ticket festival.
5) ??? – I’m going to go ahead and leave this slot open, because one of my absolute favorite things about attending festivals is experiencing new bands and artists I was previously unfamiliar with. I’ve heard many good things about X Ambassadors, Walk The Moon, Saint Motel and Glass Animals, and I’m more than looking forward to checking them out, as well as the others performing.
