After making their long awaited US debut last year Powerwolf has returned to the states for their first headlining US tour, giving fans a small taste of what has made the band a massive deal overseas. Filling up The Riveria Theatre in Chicago it was hard to tell who was more excited to be there this evening, the band or the fan.
Kicking off the evening was Unleash The Archers. The Canadian power metal group has been picking up major steam lately and it was clear to see. For being the opening act fans were moving in the pit, headbanging, and singing along. As for the band themselves they were loving every moment of it getting support like this. Blasting through a short opening set it was clear to see that the bands trajectory is leading them to hopefully headlining this same venue sooner than later.
Finally though the time had come for German power act Powerwolf to enter on stage marking their debut in Chicago. Fans had been waiting 20+ years for the band to headline in the US and the time had come. With the stage looking like a church the band quickly broke through the nonstop cheers and blasted right into “Bless ‘Em With The Blade”.
Going through an almost 2 hour set with 19 songs spanning the bands career fans were cheering and singing along nonstop along with a constant stream of crowd surfers and mosh pits. With smiles throughout the band was eating the energy up happy to be finally seeing their Chicagoland fan base that has only grown throughout the years. Theres few bands of the genre that can fill up a venue the size of The Riviera Theatre but it was clear as day to see why Powerwolf could. It shows why the band has been around so long with how spot on they sounded with Karsten “Attila Dorn” Brill hitting high notes that seem with such ease that you would think you could as well.
After it all ended though most fans could only thing two thing, “Wow that was amazing” and “I hope it doesn’t take them 20+ years to return”.
