People are just now finding out that Linkin Park once covered Deftones’ “My Own Summer (Shove It)”, and it’s glorious

Back when they were still establishing themselves during their meteoric rise to fame and they were also still touring in support of Hybrid Theory, Linkin Park used to have trouble filling out a full setlist. Mainly, it consisted of their Hybrid Theory material, as well as a couple songs off their 1999 Hybrid Theory EP. Considering their rapid and meteoric rise in fame between the end of 2000 and the release of their 2003 album Meteora, that task became even more difficult as they graduated from smaller venues to arenas within a short period of time. All of this during one album cycle (and of course, their Reanimation album that dropped in mid-2002).

Anyway, while it was always rare to have Linkin Park cover a song live (especially as their setlists swelled in size), it did happen from time to time. One of the most prominent examples was indeed in the band’s early days, where they paid tribute to one of their biggest influences, Deftones. In fact, it was specifically a cover of their song “My Own Summer (Shove It)”, and Linkin Park truly owned it. It works as a tribute to one of the most influential bands on Linkin Park’s developing sound, as well as a snapshot of where Linkin Park was at in general.
