Almost three decades after its release as arguably the most iconic song of the 90’s (though that’s obviously up for debate), Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” has entered rarified territory as one of Youtube’s highest-viewed rock videos. The track, released in 1991 off their multi-platinum album Nevermind, reached a number that only a select few musicians in general ever do. At least on Youtube, anyway.
Notably, the anthem for Generation X has joined just a few other rock songs to reach the huge milestone, including Linkin Park’s “Numb”, the video of which became the highest-viewed rock song on Youtube in history. At least for right now.
As one commenter on Youtube named Owen Smith astutely noticed, “Too bad kurt isn’t here to see that it hit 1B. He probs would’ve been mad and happy at the same time lmao.”
