Music We’re Jamming: August Edition

IMG_1666.JPG

It’s August, and my iTunes is full of both new releases I’ve been jamming, and some older tunes I’m rediscovering. If you’re interested in following what I’m listening to, check out my Last FM account and discover new tunes.
Who’s in this month’s edition of “Music We’re Jamming”? Find out after the jump!

Band: Daisyhead
Song: “Dishonest” (jam it here)
Album: Have Mercy // Daisyhead Split (2014)
FFO: Superheaven, Balance and Composure, good music

I’m immensely excited about Daisyhead’s future. No Sleep Records has a keen eye for talent, and much like labelmates Superheaven, they know how to rock out. It helps their lyrics are relatable on a personal level, as well. “I’ve lost my mind.”

Band: The Atlas Moth
Song: “The Sea Beyond” (tune in here)
Album: The Old Believer
FFO: Mastodon, Neurosis, Burst, Cult Of Luna

It’s a good thing I caught The Atlas Moth on their tour with The Ocean Collective earlier this year. With The Old Believer, they’re sure to make a dent in yearly “best-of” lists. If you consider yourself a fan of contrasting harsh/light music, you need to pick this album up.

Band: Follow Close
Song: “Last Moments Until Liftoff” (free download here)
Album: Dear EP (2014)
FFO: Prawn, Hotel Books, post-rock with a few surprises

I’ve seen Follow Close a few times in the last 6 months, and I’m proud they’re from my hometown of St Pete, Florida. Their debut EP drops 8/26, and their sound is hard to put a handle on. The track above contains elements of spoken word and more dynamics than most post-rock bands have nowadays. Follow Close is going to gain a lot of traction with this EP. Watch out, world.

Band: Underoath
Song: “Writing On The Walls” (listen here)
Album: Define The Great Line (2006)
FFO: August Burns Red, The Devil Wears Prada, Isis

Possibly the most influential band in Christian heavy music (and probably of the last 10+years), Underoath went their separate ways early in 2013. But Define The Great Line was and still is influential to a generation of post-hardcore and metalcore bands. “I hope to God you come down.”

Band: Defeater
Song: “The Red, White, and Blues” (listen here)
Album: Lost Ground (2009)
FFO: Touché Amore, Pianos Become The Teeth, My Iron Lung

Defeater is one of the most passionate live bands I saw in 2013. Something about seeing them in a small room was excellent, and “The Red, White, and Blues” is one of their career highlights so far. Fast-faced melodic hardcore with an interesting concept arc – if you’re not familiar with them yet, 2008’s Travels is a great place to start.
