One of the most anticipated anniversary tours of the year, Modest Mouse arrived at the Salt Shed on Thursday for the 20th anniversary of their classic album Good News for People Who Love Bad News.
2024 has been a good year for the band following the tragic death of drummer Jeremiah Green in 2022—first a tour with Cat Power and the Pixies, and now a celebration of one of the most influential indie rock albums of the 2000s. Kicking off the show with Good News in its entirety, vocalist/guitarist Isaac Brock (the only remaining original member of the band) then led the current lineup through a short set of additional tunes, including show closer “Gravity Rides Everything” from 2000’s The Moon and Antarctica.
One of the night’s most emotional moments came at the beginning of the second set, which started with “Third Side of the Moon,” a new track the band debuted a few months ago and have been working out in live shows since. Diehards in the crowd recognized it right away and the numerous references to remembrance and loss suggest that it may be a sort of tribute to Green’s memory. “Third Side” comes alongside other new tracks that have been circulating among the fan community (including a VIP only flexidisc!), so perhaps MM fans are in for some additional ‘good news’ in the form of a new record sooner than later.
