This is massive news. The NFL Draft is still a few months away, but Missouri’s Michael Sam, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, is likely to become the NFL’s first openly gay player. A mid-round prospect who’s rated as a solid defensive end, he helped lead Missouri to the SEC Championship game against Auburn. In a report on ESPN, Sam stated, “I am an openly, proud gay man.”
The signing of him by any team would be a landmark event in sports – there’s never been an openly gay NFL player, and only a few other sports have seen players come out – the highest-profile one being former NBA player Jason Collins. Check out a full report on him after the jump.
