Maisie Peters and Madeline The Person take over The Riviera Theatre (Show Review)

The Riviera Theatre

English singer-songwriter Maisie Peters lit up the stage to “Party in the U.S.A” by Miley Cyrus at the Riviera Theatre on Tuesday night. The delightfully catchy song played as she took to the stage and her backdrop appeared, almost as if to say, “keep your head up” on a contentious election night for a lot of her fans. She proudly proclaimed, “I might be a British girl, but I have a really affinity for America”. “Brooklyn” embarked on a memory of a trip she took to New York when she was 19, where she said she came to love big cities.

Introducing “Brooklyn,” Peters proudly proclaimed, “I might be a British girl, but I have a really affinity for America,” and the lyrics embarked on a memory of a trip she took to New York when she was 19, where she said she came to love big cities.

“Outdoor Pool” was played for the very first time on this tour, gracing the electric crowd with studio-quality vocals and a real “girl power” energy, while “The List” highlighted and memorialized all the self-improvement things we impose on ourselves.  Peters’ new hit single “Not Another Rockstar” highlighted a more edgy side of her discography as well as her recent rise in popularity both here in North America and in Europe.

Mid set, Peters stated to the crowd, almost like poetry-

“I make music for those who

Got ghosted and still wished them happy birthday,

Got ghosted by someone who isn’t their boyfriend,

Tote bag-carriers,

Teacher’s pets,

The emotionally oppressed,

Slightly unhinged,

The villains!”

Up-and-coming vocalist Madeline the Person opened for Peters with a collection of emotional vocal ballads and a cover of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin that primed the crowd for a truly empowering and electrifying night of pop. Her energy, complete with a Lisa Frank-like sticker-covered guitar, geared the crowd up for the night to come.
