LUNE prove Australian metalcore is killing it with “Ghost” EP (review)

LUNE, 2020

My Australian press contacts over at Collision Course has been hooking me up with quality bands ever since I reached out to them to cover Future Static. Thanks to them, I’ve come across alt., Father Deer Hands, and Alienist, but today’s focus lies with LUNE. This metalcore act is getting their start with the Ghost EP, and it’s one I was sure not to miss out on.

Kicking off with the title track and their debut single, LUNE is making it clear from the get-go that their brand of metalcore sounds large and in-charge. But when the chorus hits, the clean vocals manage to impress just as readily, tackling high notes with authority. The tempo-change breakdown is vicious, and the reverberating final vocals within it are just as noteworthy as an “arf arf” from Knocked Loose.

“Misery Dialogue” opts for a more driven pace, with riffs-a-plenty and more high-range vocals in the chorus. Almost downright-disturbing in its presentation in the middle, we get another crushing breakdown to wrap up the track. Compelling synth and triplets over growls make “Manipulator” my standout track. “You will never be my family” is a devastating mosh call, later one-upped by “Your blood is in my veins, but we’ll never be the fucking same” straight-up giving me goosebumps.

Next up, “Modern Bones” maintains the flurry of heaviness ahead of a powerful chorus. Group vocals add a sentimental touch to the outro of this piece. “Mirror Image” gets going with an explosive verse hitting 30 seconds in. When a verse is just as impactful as a breakdown can be, there’s something special afoot. Thankfully, LUNE has both in spades.

What an impressive start for LUNE. The Ghost EP exudes talent in every track, with inventive riffs brought out by great production. Once again, the Australian scene produces another memorable band, with  a ripple effect of inspiration sure to spawn more and more in the coming years!
