Linkin Park’s unreleased Meteora-era track “Lost” is trending all over social media – and it’s catharsis for all of us

Listening to a “new” (read: unreleased, but it’s still new) from the recording sessions for Meteora) Linkin Park song feels like catharsis now. With a similar rollout to what the band did with the 20th anniversary of Hybrid Theory, they’re approaching Meteora with the same kind of reverence for their fans. Considering that a devoted fanbase is what built up the band before they even had a record deal, it’s not much of a surprise.

When you hear “Lost”, though, it’s hard not to be transported back to the first time you heard Meteora. After all, the mid-tempo track isn’t too dissimilar to “Numb”, and in that context it’s probably easy to see why it didn’t make the final cut for the album’s release. It’s the first opening salvo in what’s sure to be an exciting rollout in celebration of an album that, for some, is just as important as Hybrid Theory.

To give you an idea of just how devoted LP’s fanbase is, consider that, at the time of this writing, it’s been less than 24 hours since the song’s video was launched on YouTube. In that time, the song is now trending as the #4 song on ALL of YouTube, as well as one of the biggest singles in the world. Also, the song is #2 in ALL of the UK on iTunes, just behind Depeche Mode’s new single “Ghosts Again” – in a country where Depeche Mode is one of the country’s biggest exports.

Let’s be honest, though. Does any band bring people of varying nationalities, gender identities, personalities, and ages quite like Linkin Park? Obviously that’s up for debate, but one thing is clear – they’re one of the most important bands of any genre of the new millennium. On a day where we got new music from Narrow Head, Paramore, In Flames, PTV, and a week with new singles from Of Virtue, The Plot In You, and so many more, one thing is clear. Hearing an unheard Linkin Park song is catharsis for anyone who’s ever had a passing interest in the band. Stay young forever.
