Linkin Park’s “In The End” is poised to become the first nu-metal song to reach a billion Spotify streams

Just last year, Linkin Park’s “In The End”, off their 2000 album Hybrid Theory, entered rarefied air. Already long known as the most commercially successful band of the nu-metal era (and Hybrid Theory being one of the most successful albums in recorded history), the band’s iconic track (specifically, its music video) reached one billion views on Youtube – something very few rock and metal bands have ever done. Now, “In The End” is poised to reach a milestone that no other nu-metal band has really come close to touching.

The list of songs of any genre that have over a billion Spotify streams is fairly exclusive company, actually. Notably, of the top 100 most-streamed songs on Spotify, just two of them are from a decade that’s not the 2010s – Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Oasis’ “Wonderwall”. Now, “In The End” is on track to become one of the few rock songs to reach that milestone.

In fact, at the time of this writing, “In The End” is just 30 million Spotify streams short of being the first nu-metal song to reach a billion Spotify streams, cementing themselves as arguably the nu-metal band with the most longevity of the last 20+ years. Only a handful of nu-metal bands come particularly close to that milestone – Papa Roach’s “Last Resort” is at 613 million (they’re a success story when it comes to longevity themselves), Korn and Limp Bizkit have some songs that are in the 100-200+ million range, and Disturbed’s “Down With The Sickness” at 426 million streams. System Of A Down are also close, as “Chop Suey!” clocks in at 648 million.

It’s all pretty bonkers when you think about it. While LP has long been known as the nu-metal band with the most broad commercial appeal, this is still a pretty monumental achievement that cements the band with some of the biggest and most popular musicians of all time – not just of their genre.
