Let’s Talk Wrestling : WCW Halloween Havoc 1997 (Review)

WCW

Halloween Havoc

10.26.1997

Las Vegas, Nevada

Yuji Nagata (w/Sonny Onoo) vs. Ultimo Dragon
Really solid opening match. Both men had great chemistry, good in ring story telling, and the match moved along at a solid pace. Towards the end it slowed down a bit but was a really good match to start the card. 3.5 / 5
Gedo vs. Chris Jericho
Match is just slower and really uneventful to an almost boring point. One bad top rope move leaves jericho coming down on his neck in what could have been a really bad way. 1.5 / 5
WCW World Cruiserweight Title Vs. Mask Match
Eddie Guerrero (c) vs. Rey Misterio Jr.
A fantastic and legendary bout between these two and possibly the best they ever had. Full of fast and slow moments mixed effortless in ways that hadn’t been seen much in WCW here. Both men perform at 100% here and have some of the best in ring chemistry ever. 5 / 5
Alex Wright (w/Debra) vs. Steve McMichael
Super bland match here. Moved along slow and ended with a ref distraction that lasted way too long and Goldberg ran in and stayed too long. When the ref is on camera looking around and hearing Goldberg 6 inches away yet looks away it becomes just dumb. 1 / 5
Man Vs. Woman Match
Jacqueline vs. Disco Inferno
Another forgetful match. Most of the is spent with her chasing Disco around while commentary talks about the main event. .5 / 5
WCW United States Heavyweight Title Match
Curt Hennig (c) vs. Ric Flair
Not the best of either one of these guys matches between the other. Much more focused on their long running feud at the time instead of being a great match. Ends up just being okay and continues their feud. 2.5 / 5
Singles Match (Special Referee: Larry Zbyszko)
Lex Luger vs. Scott Hall
Luger was super over here and while I enjoy both him and Hall this was a mediocre match at best. It was much more between Hall and special ref Zbysko with it almost going too far several times. With NWO involvement its a classic type WCW match but just nothing too memorable. 2 / 5
Sudden Death Match
Diamond Dallas Page vs. Randy Savage
Really good brawl match between the two. Went throughout the arena and even used some of the entrance set. Had some run ins, ref bumps, and both men playing their injuries well. Not the best match these two had but a fun one for sure. 3 / 5
Non Title Steel Cage Match
Roddy Piper vs. Hollywood Hogan
Hogan here just is so slow and boring. The match itself is also incredibly slow with Piper trying his best here. Throw in fake Stings and a Macho Man run in and just nothing here works. 1 / 5
