Let’s Talk Wrestling : ECW House Party 1996 (Review)

ECW

House Party

05.01.1996

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

911 & Rey Misterio Jr. vs. The Eliminators (John Kronus & Perry Saturn)
Starts off with a jumping on 911 and Mysterio runs in flipping all around. Bill Alfonso could talk his way to anything and get over and proves it before this match. Seeing him jump in and help choke 911 with Tazz was a great quick moment. Both teams having a chicken fight only for Mysterio to hurricanrana him straight onto his head was rough. This was a match in a very rough sense, most of the time was just 2 on 1 fights and interference. 2 / 5
Axl Rotten vs. Rob Van Dam
We have a super young RVD here in his ECW debut. It was an okay match with RVD doing much of the same that he’d go on to do for years. Some moves didn’t hit right and the crowd didn’t seem much into it at all. 2 / 5
Mikey Whipwreck (c) vs. Too Cold Scorpio (w/Woman)
This was a solid match between 2 Cold and Mickey. 2 Cold helped hold it together some with Mickeys trainwreck of a character. Both men looked great and got their hits in with 2 Cold playing the heel and making the match drag on as he’d break the pins. The Raven run in could of been left out though. 2.5  /5
Taz (w/Bill Alfonso) vs. Hack Myers
A quicker match with Taz doing most the offense with throws and MMA moves. Not bad at all just not too memorable. 2 / 5
Buh Buh Ray Dudley (w/Big Dick Dudley, Chubby Dudley, DW Dudley & Sign Guy Dudley) vs. Jimmy del Ray (w/Mr. Hughes)
Pretty awful match here. Dudley had his crew and his promo before the match almost lasted longer than the match itself. 1 / 5
The Sandman (w/Woman) (c) vs. Konnan
Sandman was super over but also seemed super sloppy here. Match just didn’t really flow that well and was overly long. Konnan did bleed quite a bit though. Sandman takes quite the awkward looking fall through a table. Both men take cane shots back and forth and are bloody messes. Ending was cheap considering how over Sandman was. Just wish the match itself moved at a better pace and didn’t feel like it had constant stoppage. It didn’t help that for the little effort Sandman put in, Konnan put in even less.  2 / 5
Stevie Richards (w/The Blue Meanie) vs. Sabu
A really great match actually. Fast paced and Sabu seems to do just as much damage to himself as he did to Stevie. Sabu was crazy over but this might be the match that made ECW fans see Stevie for his in ring ability outside   of the BWO character. 3.5 / 5
The Gangstas (Mustafa & New Jack) vs. The Public Enemy (Johnny Grunge & Rocco Rock)
This was Public Enemies last match for ECW before leaving for WCW and the crowd made sure to chant about it. Match kicks off with New Jack stabbing Johnny Grudge in the head busting him open. This was an all out war street fight. Johnny and New Jack went throughout the arena while the other two kept it a bit slower paced in and around the ring. Weapons and blood galore though this was an all out final match before the Enemies departure and everything you’d expect from these two teams. 4 /5
