Interview: Nevertel slay with savage new single “back on me”

We’ve been with Nevertel since their start. The more time passes, the better the post-hardcore band gets – I was blown away with their last single “Everything on my Mind” and still play it on the regular. The first thing I ever wrote for an online pub covered them – I sent it their way and they hyped me up so much that I spent 2020 pursuing writing with a passion. Now, I got the chance to speak with members Raul Lopez and Alec Davis on their new single “Back on Me” which just premiered with a music video today on BVTV Music:

The New Fury: “Back On Me” is your boldest video yet – what made you add the shock value to the visual?

Raul Lopez: Yeah forsure one of the boldest videos we’ve made, This song just felt very different to us from production to structure. We wanted to bring some of that shock value into the video. So we brought in our homie Cam Simon with Motion State Media to bring our vision to life. And he absolutely smashed it, it felt great to bounce ideas back and forth and create something visually that we feel represents the track.

The New Fury: Give us a little behind-the-scenes look – what did they use for the blood? Was the bodybag comfy?

Alec Davis: We actually bought three gallons of movie prop fake blood. It was very convincing and a little nasty at the same time. For the body bag, we wrapped Jeremy in several layers of thick painters plastic. The looks of pure discomfort on Jeremy’s face made it pretty clear he was not having a good time while covered in blood and wrapped up in a plastic cocoon. But ultimately he powered through it and was really a good sport about the whole thing. From the sidelines it was hilarious to watch his reactions to his situation.

The New Fury: The R&B/Metal blend continues in this track – what were you listening to that inspired Back On Me?

Raul: This track was heavily inspired by RL GRIMES – Undo AWAY Remix. Specifically the voice manipulation, when I heard that I immediately went into the studio inspired to make something with that vibe. As the song developed I think we were heavily inspired by our usual favorites Chase Atlantic and Bring me the horizon.

The New Fury: Your last few releases have had a wide range of styles – are you trying to capture every mood in a relationship?

Alec: I don’t know if we’re trying to capture every mood in a relationship, that’s a tough one. It certainly looks like we are though, I’ll give you that! I know for me personally, a topic I write about a lot is the relationship you have with yourself. As a group we try not to get too bogged down or stuck on one topic trying to force a song to be written. If we’re feeling a certain way it usually translates to different styles of music from us.

The New Fury: Is 2021 the year we finally get another Nevertel EP/album?

Raul: So I don’t want to confirm anything yet BUT you can always expect Nevertel to be working on new music whether it’s a body of work or singles. One thing I will say is that I’m SO excited for what we have in store for y’all in 2021.
Thanks again to the guys in Nevertel for always counting on us for exclusive coverage – they’re a killer act and I always look forward to what’s next, so peep back on me above!
