Interview: Joshua Travis (Emmure)

Upon listening to “Flag Of The Beast”, a song off the 7th full-length album from New York nu-metal/deathcore/metalcore group Emmure, it’s easy to say that it’s the band’s best album since their 2007 debut, Goodbye To The Gallows. It’s not that much different than the band’s previous work, and doesn’t really break much new ground, but maybe the key word is “fresh”. Because that’s exactly what Look At Yourself accomplishes – it’s not a lengthy album compared to Eternal Enemies, but instead trims the fat and makes Emmure sound revitalized.

Perhaps it’s the addition of new members that worked? In this case, it’s likely – new additions Phil Lockett, Josh Miller, and especially guitarist Joshua Travis have been important to the band’s “rebirth” of sorts. This is evident in the conversation I had with guitarist Joshua Travis on the final date of their tour supporting After The Burial which concluded recently. We briefly touched on previous projects, but also what it was like working with Frankie in the studio, as well as one of the best bands Emmure is playing with this summer on the Vans Warped Tour – experimental metal band Candiria. You can check out the full conversation below.
