Interview: INCITE’s Richie Cavalera & Christopher EL discusses “Build to Destroy”, Sports & Tattoos

INCITE, an American Groove Metal band from Phoenix, Arizona, formed in 2004. The band currently consists of Richie Cavalera, Christopher EL, Dru Rome & Lennon Lopez. The band have released two EP’s, ‘Murder’ (2006) and ‘Divided’ (2007), and have released four full length LP’s, ‘The Slaughter’ (2009), ‘All Out War’ (2012), ‘Up in Hell’ (2014), ‘The Oppression’ (2016) and are set to release their fifth full length LP on January 25, 2019 titled ‘Build to Destroy’.  Frontman Richie Cavalera and EL were kind enough to take some time out of their busy schedules to answer some questions.

What’s your must haves on your rider when heading out on tour?

I love a bottle of Jack Daniels those are rare but much appreciated on the road. EL and me love our whiskey especially when it’s free hahaha. Also sour patch kids I’m like a crackhead with those things.

What are your favourite films, and why?

Army of Darkness and Big Trouble In Little China, I’m just all about the crazy story line with magic and creatures I just find it awesome to see crazy shit and these movies have a lot of that. Two great characters is Ash and Jack Burton

What’s your favourite place to tour, home or away?

I love to tour Europe. It just has an amazing vibe there. Fans are still so fired up and they just have fun and enjoy all kinds of music and have killer old architecture.

Talking of Home or Away, Richie, I know you’re big into your sports, what is your favourite sport, and why?

I’d say football for sure. It was fun to play when I was younger and it’s always been something I’ve enjoyed to watch. I never feel like it’s boring like many sports can be.

EL, I know you’re a tattoo artist, do you take it out on tour with you, and what is your preferred style to tattoo?

When we tour the U.S. I usually bring my travel rig.  On our most recent tour,  I put a blast out on social media that I would tattoo any fans that wanted a palm sized jammer, time permitting.

As far as styles, when I was coming up, you didn’t have the luxury of being a “specialist” you had to do a little bit of everything. If I have my druthers, I prefer Traditional Americana. It’s classics,  holds up over time, & never goes out of style. Besides, it’s what attracted me to tattooing in the first place.

Do you guys take your family out on tour with you?

No, we try to stay away from that especially at this point we travel in vans so I imagine that wouldn’t be fun and it’s just a distraction. Eventually, we’ll probably go down that path especially because we tour so much, it would make things easier that’s for sure.

Your new album ‘Build to Destroy’ is due out on January 25 2019, what are we to expect from this new album and was the writing process for this different to your previous four releases

Oh yeah, we are so fired up for this one!  I think old fans and new fans will love it. It has as the groove, the heavy, and the anger that Incite is. The record has a lot of surprises too.  Guitars really crush and solos are throughout the whole album, which is something we’ve never done but always wanted to. Also drums are killer on this record. Lennon brought it for this record. I think being with the same lineup now just made everything better as far as music and songs go. Writing was a lot different we let Dru write all the demos and bring them to us.  We fine tuned the material after that, rather than doing it all at the same time like we used to. It made the process much easier.

The band’s new album ‘Build to Destroy’ drops in January via Minus HEAD and you can preorder the new album here: BandCamp | iTunes | Amazon
