I have been following Silence for awhile now. It is one band that I have grown to love on a musical and inspirational level. Recently I had a chance to talk to Hunter Young (Vocals) about some recent changes and what Silence stands for & some plans for 2013. This band will never give up and I only see bigger things for them in the future.
The Interview:
You guys just dropped a music video for “In Somni” off of “Dead Presidents”, How was it making that video and how did it come about (Concept and details)?
We shot the video while we we’re on tour. We knew Tyler of Black Mask, so we met up while we we’re in Pennsylvania on some crazy mountain. We wanted mostly performance with some scenery, so it worked out perfectly. He’s a great director and producer, check out press and release media
Your full length “Dead Presidents” was released in November, How do you feel the response has been?
Honestly it has been great. We sold a decent amount of copies for little to no promotion. The album was engineered by our guitarist Sean and produced by the both of us. We don’t receive very many complaints on the style change at all.
On a personal level which song off “Dead Presidents” means the most to you and why?
Musically it would be “In Somni” because it captures a lot of our musical aspects. Lyrically it would be “American Ethos”, it’s a duet of sorts with Dom Fox (Bad Luck, ex- von wolfe) and I. The lyrics are about the federal reserve and about the catholic church. Basically calling them out for the liars and thieves they are. I love Dom’s scream, it was great to hear how it complimented each other.
Any laid out plans for the new EP you can share?
We plan on writing a crushing series of songs. We’re trying not to over think it.
You were signed by a couple of labels (Matchless & We are Triumphant), what led up to or was the reason for your departure?
We realized we aren’t going to sell ourselves short anymore. We won’t sign to a label unless it’s a label we love and respect.
What would be your ideal label to sign with and why?
Epitaph Records, starting as a punk label, most of their bands became iconic. They aren’t closed minded and currently have some of the biggest names in metal in their roster. I’ve always loved them as a label.
Any plans for a new tour or who would you like to tour with next?
Yes! We’re going to be spending 8 months out of the year starting this fall. We’d like to go out with our dudes in Adaliah again, as well as our homies in Volumes.
If you could express only one message in your music, what would it be and why?
No bullshit, it would be about hating myself. Because you’re always trying to better yourself, always losing friends you wish you never made, you can always relate to yourself. With our music recently it’s been about my struggle with hypochondria and anxiety, and how much I HATE IT.
Being a person who knows a lot about DIY, what tips would you give DIY bands starting off?
Don’t be picky, don’t demand too much. Everyone hates you at first, sometimes they come around sometimes they don’t. You just have to stick it out
While on the road, what moment or story stick out to you above the others?
There’s to many to count, we just scream at each other (ha ha).
In closing, is there anything you would like to add for the readers?
Ride Harley’s, eat pizza, smoke cigs, sleep all day.
