Would anyone have expected a band that’s released albums as heavy as From Mars To Sirius to be playing at the Olympics? Well, make no mistake, that band is Gojira. France is, of course, not the USA. While the USA basically refuses to allow metal music to touch the biggest stages it has to offer (even a band as big as Metallica? Come ON!), Gojira is now actually the first metal band to perform at the Olympics. In their home country of France, no less – and on arguably the biggest stage in the world.
If you’ve been following the band for any length of time, though, it’s possible that you knew a moment like this was always in the cards. Their last three records have debuted in the top 10 in their home country of France, and their most recent record, 2021’s Fortitude, hit number 12 in the USA. At this point, it’s safe to say their audience is a truly global one. When you also consider the fact that the band has always tried to champion causes related to the environment and protecting Earth’s natural resources, Gojira is a band that any metal fan can be proud of.
