Longtime vocalist and founding member of the first-ever metalcore band Atreyu, Alex Varkatzas, has reportedly left the band after over 20 years and countless shows as one of metalcore’s most commercially successful acts.
While neither the band nor Alex himself has spoken up about it just yet, Lambgoat confirmed the news earlier this morning, saying:
Alex Varkatzas, co-founder and vocalist of California metalcore/alternative metal outfit Atreyu, has exited the group. While no official announcement has been made, Lambgoat can now confirm the news. Drummer and co-vocalist Brandon Saller will presumably handle vocals going forward, though time will tell.
It should be noted that Alex recently welcomed a baby girl into his family, which might reasonably be part of the reported departure. The band was recently in the studio recording with Mark Hoppus, which does make the likely timing of this strange.
