For me at least, I find myself drawn to albums and bands that defy easy categorization. That’s not to say that easily pigeonholed bands are bad – many of my favorite bands are also the “bread and butter” acts. You know, the ones who don’t throw many curveballs, but they’ve honed their signature sound to a razor sharp edge, and they perform their style of music better than most.

Houston, TX progressive/indie rock band Crimson Arrow fall comfortably somewhere in between those two lines on their new album, going for a sound that’s both immediate (“Telescope”, “Autumn Leigh”) and expansive (“Kings”, “Sunsets”). This dichotomy is effective because it gives listeners an immediate payoff, as well as a reason(s) to keep coming back to the album again. It even has guest spots from vocalists Kurt Travis and Andrew Michael Wells (of Eidola fame).

We’re stoked to be premiering the full-length, Living In Still Frames, in full. The album drops this Friday the 13th (spooky!), and having listened to the album half a dozen times in the last week, I can tell you that if you’re a fan of bands like Moving Mountains, Circa Survive, Eidola, practically any Blue Swan Records band, or even The Appleseed Cast, you’re going to enjoy this a lot. If for some reason you’re not into any of the above bands, you should get acclimated to Crimson Arrow anyway. While you’re at it, check out a cool interview the band did over at Teal Cheese.
