Earlier in 2022, UK post-hardcore rising stars Caskets headed out on their first-ever tour of North America, in support of Dayseeker, Thornhill, and Holding Absence. To say it raised the band’s profile is an understatement. Having only existed for a few years now, the band emerged onto the scene with their single “Signs”, and subsequent singles, a debut full-length last year, and the support of Sharptone Records (who’ve done a killer job pushing their profile) have all helped Caskets bring their electric sound to the world. Currently pulling in a staggering 1.1 million+ Spotify listeners a month though, the question is – how did they get here?
Originally named Captives before legal issues forced a name change, Caskets’ explosion in popularity has much to do with vocalist Matt Flood. To say his voice is electric is probably understating things, to be perfectly honest. Extremely versatile (which is a microcosm for the band as a whole), Flood’s passion for the lyrics he sings immediately sells what Caskets are going for. So too is the band’s solid lyricism, which inevitably will hit home with anyone who battles mental health struggles and the trials and tribulations life throws at us. There’s also not a lot of screaming in the band’s music, but don’t let that fool you – while melodic and accessible (a prominent electronic undercurrent is prevalent through many of their songs), Caskets manage to straddle that line between melodic and heavy, without ever seeming like they’re trying too hard.
Even on their newest single, “Guiding Light”, Caskets continue to let all aspects of their instrumentation shine. With a THICC AF bass tone that complements the song’s more accessible nature, it’s bound to be one of the band’s most popular songs to date. There’s even a guitar solo! Caskets are technically proficient, too, not relying on insane vocal talents to create a sound that continues to gain them new followers each day. One listen to the band and you’ll understand why, too. And Caskets is just getting started.
