New Fury Media

Music. Gaming. Nostalgia. Culture.

Chad Ruhlig, LGND vocalist, on first new songs in six years (interview)

It’s always a thrill to interview a musician I’ve been listening to for over a decade. One of the first heavy bands in my iPod was For The Fallen Dreams, and subsequently, LGND. The Pale Horse found itself in heavy rotation, with punishing vocals over some of my favorite breakdowns in the genre. LGND returned in 2015 with a surprise self-titled, and have dropped two singles in the past few months. Today, I’m checking in with vocalist Chad Ruhlig:

New Fury Media: Between LGND, For the Fallen Dreams, and doing tons of guest features, you’ve been in the game for 15 years now and are still going strong. What’s kept you motivated this long?
Chad Ruhlig: I still love the process of creating and recording music. It could be with my bands or anybody really, that’s been the best part of the journey. I’m still finding new ways to improve as a vocalist and lyricist so that is a big motivation to continue to release material over the years.

New Fury: For LGND’s next EP, there’s a ton of collaboration going around between guest musicians and producers. What’s it like to work with your friends on this project?
Chad: It was great to just write with like minds and friends who respect what I do and vice versa. No outside noise, just music and that made the process that much more enjoyable. Back to the basics of just creating without any agenda.

New Fury: With Legend being a contentious band name, you made the change to LGND in 2015. How stressful was it to rebrand and have you been confused with rappers that go by Legend on Spotify/Apple Music before?
Chad: With a name as common as “Legend” it was tough to cut through the amount of content throughout the internet as it is. Moving the bands name over to LGND seemed like the best choice while still keeping the bones of the bands material. It was going to be a challenge either way, but it’s definitely had better results since switching the name over.

New Fury: Some musicians pull double-duty at shows when they’re in multiple bands of similar sounds. Would we ever see FTFD and LGND on the same bill?

Chad: Possible for a festival, but never a full on tour. I like focusing on one thing at a time, writing or performing but definitely possible under the right conditions.

New Fury: When touring hopefully returns this year, what are your dream bands to share the stage with?
Chad: It’d be great to do a run with Love and Death, big fan of their newest release. Limp Bizkit would definitely be a bucket list tour for me as well. Here’s to hoping tours in general open back up though. Would love to see all of the fans again regardless of who it’s with.
LGND’s new EP is coming soon, and also features members of Attila, The Browning, and more guest producers. Check out the previous new single, “Psychedelic Nightmare”, below!
