This week’s ‘Band of the Week’ goes to Australian black metal group, Woods of Desolation.

While I was scouring the internet for metal releases of 2014, I happened upon a band that I was unfamiliar with: Woods of Desolation. Woods of Desolation are a black metal band from Australia, and while their focus is largely on the black metal aspect of the music, they also incorporate elements of post-rock and post-metal. This is obviously present on their latest release, As the Stars, with passionate crescendos layered over devastating and bleak black metal riffs. Emotionally charged lyrics, soaring melodies, and a hopeless atmosphere are all pieced together in one package, with its intentionally fuzzy production giving it even more character.
These factors are also present in their earlier releases, such as Torn Beyond Reason, which offers an even darker and more brooding air to it, with less of a focus on the post-metal styled crescendos and more of a focus on the riffs and moody attitude. Although As the Stars’ poignant compositions and relentless leads will leave you gasping for air, the melancholy of Torn Beyond Reason is what will keep your head under the surface, sentencing you to be forever submerged in this vast, open, and dark ocean, never to hint at any way out, or any way to get above water again. However, the melodies, catchy riffs, many fills, and creative songwriting will make drowning a much more pleasant experience.
