An Open Letter To Lil Peep

Dear Lil Peep. You’ll likely never see this, but I hope you’ve found peace. A cursory listen to any of your songs made me realize you were hurting – badly. But I hope you know the impact you made in your short 21 years of life will save many more than you ever thought possible.

The kids loved you, Peep. You stepped on the stage and the faces of those hurting just like you, well, they lit up. Because they could relate. That sadness and pain in your lyrics? Maybe it meant victory for some, knowing that you were telling and re-telling the stories of your fans overcoming their own adversity. Maybe it was listening to your new album in the brand new car they bought after getting that first job, or maybe it was the soundtrack to rekindling that fire with the boy or girl down the street. I’m sure you saw the kinds of fans you had at your shows. Young. White. Black. Rich. Poor. Gay. Straight. They loved you! And they always will.

If you were to look at Twitter from where you are amongst the stars, you’d know just how you were appreciated. Did you see how Makonnen, Diplo, and Post Malone paid tribute to you? We all did.

You left us too young. But before you did, you left us the gift of music and storytelling that almost anyone could relate to. And that? It’s timeless, your lyrics are etched in the fibers of time forever. Nobody can take that away from you.
