Album Review: “American Candy” by The Maine

cover326x326

The Maine is back and more ready than ever to satisfy your musical sweet tooth with their much anticipated fifth studio album, American Candy.

Whether you love or hate them, you cannot deny that the Arizona quintet is constantly evolving. What with moving away from their pop-rock roots to taking on a more mature and darker sound in album Forever Halloween (2013), American Candy is a melting pot of old and new styles which will appeal to old fans as a sweet realization that The Maine has come back to those roots with a more grown up approach, and to new fans; an album that will leave them wondering what else they are capable of with future albums.

This is one sweet and sugary treat you could never regret! Combined with songs that will become classic road-trip singalongs (Miles Away, English Girls, Same Suit, Different Tie, Diet Soda Society), to the grittier, emotional tones that encourages the idea that the John O’Callaghan we knew in Forever Halloween has not left us (24 Floors, American Candy, (Un)Lost), best friend anthems (Another Night on Mars), and middle fingers held high to those that probably told the band that they wouldn’t get anywhere if they didn’t follow others’ direction (My Hair, Am I Pretty?). The Maine has accomplished an seemingly impossible feat that is a perfect album with their trifecta of pop, rock and indie sounds. It is truly a great album that should be given a chance regardless of feelings towards earlier releases.

You can buy the album at retailers such as Best Buy, (only $7.99 during the first week), FYE, Hastings, Amoeba Music, Amazon, Newbury Comics, ZIA Record Exchange, Bull Moose, Silver Platters, Dimple, Waterloo, and even your local independent record store.
