Album Review – Amenize – Black Sky

Stream Black Sky here!

Be it in metal, folk, whatever – I am always a fan of narration in music. Along with the silky smooth vocals that Sao Paulo’s Amenize opens up with on “Unlocked”, the opening speech delivered in “An Endless Dystopia” is a great way to open an album that has a post-apocalyptic concept. Black Sky marks Amenize’s second studio release following 2010’s When Angels Turn Into Demons.

90’s aggression fuelled with a new flavour of metal mixes Sevendust and Sepultura into a colourful, heavy and thrashing concoction that accurately captures Amenize’s new record, oozing the heaviness with “Rivals” with vocalist Bruno Corey turning up the heat as the album progresses. “Leeches” thumps with all of the bass, followed by an instrumental melody dripping from “Blood River”. The title track, with a music video accompanying it, “Black Sky” was the first taste of the album and still is in need of some headbanging. While you should be singing along to it, I would recommend not trying to actually scream the lyrics – them gutturals head into deathcore territory.

I would have liked some more diversity with the tracks, similar to “Blood River”, with it slowing down in between songs. Nonetheless, Black Sky is a total rock show. I grew up with hard rock’s style of production and style, and I am a fan of Amenize’s reinvention with a metal spice.

4/5 – BLACK SKY
