Album Review: Aborted – “The Necrotic Manifesto”

Aborted the necrotic manifesto artwork

Belgian brutal death metal outfit, Aborted, are at it again with their latest installment of their discography entitled “The Necrotic Manifesto”.  The new album is no exception to Aborted’s brand of horror/gore themed music consisting of blistering fast blast beats, crushing riffs, and a hostile vocal performance. Does “The Necrotic Manifesto” live up to Aborted’s previous material?

Listeners unfamiliar with Aborted  should have a solid image in their mind without even having to take a listen by glancing at the album artwork (pictured above) and the track listing filled with extreme titles such as “An Enumeration of Cadavers” and “Of Dead Skin and Decay”. Each track is as relentless as the next and will leave extreme metal fans immensely satisfied. With the album clocking in at around forty-five minutes, the album does leave the listener content but by all means does not overstay its welcome as many similar bands have the tendency to do. Fans will find Aborted have not made any drastic changes to the latest full-length but the group still keeps material interesting and more mature than previous releases.

“The Necrotic Manifesto” begins with the introduction “Six Feet of Foreplay” which contains several sound effects intending to create an unsettling atmosphere. After the slow and ominous introduction of creaks, scrapes, and an eerie choir effect, the listener is thrown directly into the assault of “The Extirpation Agenda”. From this point on, the listener will not have a split-second break from the ruthless brutality Aborted is known for. However, there are many elements that separate the full-length  from your typical death metal act. Aborted explores fields of melody and technicality throughout with both riffs and solos. Although these areas are heavily explored and keep the flow diverse and interesting, the melodies and technical moments do not take away from the overall crushing impact of the record. Some of the most stand-out tracks could arguably be seen in the catchy vocal patterns seen in the seventh song “Coffin Upon Coffin” and the slower portions of the closing track “Cenobites”. Fans will also be ecstatic to see a re-recorded version of the title track from Aborted’s 1999 release “The Purity of Perversion” in the track-listing and guest vocal appearances from The Acacia Strain’s Vincent Bennett and Wormed’s Phlegeton.

Overall, “The Necrotic Manifesto” is a great addition to the Aborted discography and is one of the more notable  extreme releases so far of the year. Although the album does not portray anything ground-breaking, it still is a very solid release from the kings of Belgian death metal. “The Necrotic Manifesto” should be embraced by extreme metal fans and definitely deserves a spot in your collection.

Rating: 8.5/10
