Album Of The Week: Witness Silver Snakes Go Deeper, Darker on “Saboteur”

Silver-Snakes-Saboteur

If you’re not familiar with Silver Snakes, you should be very soon. Their 2014 album, Year Of The Snake, was one of my favorite records of the year, and now they’re back with an even darker album in Saboteur, which was released last Friday. This is some truly compelling music – but what makes Saboteur so thrilling? Find out below.

As mentioned before, Saboteur is a dark album, not for the faint of heart. Think a darker, sludgier Thrice, or a more melodic version of NIN’s opus The Downward Spiral, or even mid-period Godflesh (Pure, especially). Tracks like “Charmer” and especially “La Dominadora” are shorter pieces that bring life to the album, and are the two songs that recall the greatness that mid-90’s Nine Inch Nails brought to the table.

Arguably the best song on the album is the almost 10 minute long “Dresden”, which has a rather impressive buildup, and then simply explodes during the 2nd half of the song. It’s compelling stuff from a band who hinted at compositions like this on Year Of The Snake, but their ability and freedom to explore dense soundscapes has never felt more important than it is on this track.

The fact that Silver Snakes is supporting Coheed and Cambria, Glassjaw, and I The Mighty on their upcoming tour is nothing short of awesome for the band. Even better is that they’ll be able to hone their talent on some of the biggest stages they’ve ever played. Stream the song “Dresden” below, and if you’re hooked, just go buy the whole thing.
