On a less than ideally cold May night Against The Current drew a big crowd to stay warm and bring their brand of alt rock to Bottomlounge.
Kicking off the evening was Yours Truly all the way from Australia. They did great with getting the crowd going given the tough circumstance they had to deal with. The show was listed as starting at 7pm and the band walked on stage just after 625pm to start their set, with only maybe 1/4th of the room filled as it was quite earlier than fans expected. They still blew through a great 30 minute set with some hits and songs from their EP and last album and the crowd that was there knew the songs and got into it. Seeing them fire on all cylinders early was even more impressive knowing that the band was only roughly a month out of losing half its members. Hopefully the band stays steady with these members and returns sooner than later.
Trophy Eyes hit the stage next for a different type of mood. While Yours Truly was more of a poppy type of pop punk, Trophy Eyes brought the emotions and headbands more so. Set with a darker tone the bands lyrics resonated deep here as fans sang every word and came flying over the barricade at various points throughout the night. While the band wasn’t active running around much they instead put that energy into the music being played here. Musically the odd band of the night but fit right inbetween these two other bands somewhat perfectly.
Finally it was time for Against The Current and to say they ramped the energy up to 11 would be an understatement. Blasting through a 19 song set ranging their discography the band, and in particular vocalist Chrissy Costanza, never stopped moving. Now people can say a band is energetic but Costanza brought that to the next level making sure she took full advantage of every space on the stage and risers that she could making sure everyone in the crowd got up close and personal.
Speaking of the crowd it was clear who they came for as they jumped and sang through all the hits and cuts of the set. Featuring heavy on the bands last album, 2021s “Fever”, they also whipped through stuff from past releases and even included a Blink 182 cover and their song from the hit game “League Of Legends”.
Its great to see Against The Current drawing like this as well as I know of their past and upcoming as a band starting out on Youtube. I had a family member that found them super early on and I saw how engaged they were with their fans from the start so seeing them fill up the Bottomlounge was a joy. If you are able to catch them on this tour I highly recommend it because next tour I’d bet won’t be in a place as intimate.
