A Fundamental Debate: The RHCP Super Bowl Controversy

hhhnnnggg

As you probably have heard, it was quite clear during the Red Hot Chili Peppers/Bruno Mars Super Bowl halftime show, none of the instruments (save vocals) were played live. It sparked a huge debate whether they did or not, and Flea issued a statement that they indeed did not – because they were told not to.

Now, here’s the debate. Is it right or wrong to not play live instruments? I’m of the camp that music needs to be played live – but with an event like this to play in front of millions of people, and the setup it requires, I can empathize with Flea. I don’t profess to know how long setting up a stage during the middle of one of the world’s biggest sporting events actually takes, but I imagine it’s not easy.

What’s your stance on the issue?
