Arriving shortly before the summer of 2004, Underoath’s They’re Only Chasing Safety was the band’s true breakout moment. Before the album’s release, the band’s previous material was rooted in decidedly heavier metal – at least until 2002’s The Changing Of Times became an unexpected success. Spencer Chamberlain replaced Dallas Taylor (who went on to form Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster) on vocals, and the rest was basically history.
On TOCS, though, Underoath pursued a post-hardcore sound that also fit in with what was popular at the time. Led by singles “Reinventing Your Exit” and “It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door” (which remain concert staples to this day), it quickly became Underoath’s most successful album to date. Certified Gold and peaking at #101 on the Billboard 200, the record set the stage for 2006’s darker Define The Great Line, which peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 and became the highest-charting album by any Christian band since 1997.
