On Sunday April 23rd, Lewis Capaldi brought his sold out tour “Broken by desire to be heavenly sent” tour to the UCCU Center in Orem Utah. Fans persevered through the cold and waited outside for hours Sunday morning to secure the coveted barricade spot in hopes of being as close as possible to the stage.
To start off the night Em Beihold came on stage with a drummer and guitarist to sing her song “Groundhog Day”. From the start of her set to the end she won the hearts of the crowd as they were very involved and enthusiastic throughout her set. I had first heard of Em through tik tok when she released “Numb Little Bug” which is a song about the feeling of numbness you start to feel as you get older and the responsibilities you have grow. This song happened to be the song she ended with which I think was a great choice because it’s one of her more so it brought great crowd involvement.. Gratefully I had the opportunity to see her live and hear more of her songs, because she has a great set of songs that have relatable themes.
One of my favorites that she played during her set was “Until I Found You.” which is originally written by Stephen Sanchez but she is featured on one of the releases. One thing I appreciated about her performance in not only this song but throughout her set was the usage of the stage. She did a great job of utilizing every part of the stage so everyone could see and wave to her. Unfortunately this was her last stop on Lewis Capaldi’s tour, but I would recommend taking the next opportunity to see her as she puts on a fun show.
My favorite part of any show is right before the headliner comes on stage, the crowd is always buzzing and the excitement in the air is almost tangible. Lewis came on stage and the crowd went crazy, instantly he connected with the crowd by throwing out peace signs and striking fun poses before starting with his new song “Forget Me”. The crowd instantly responded by enthusiastically singing back every word to him. One of the things that stood out to me from the very beginning was Lewis Capaldi’s sense of humor. After the first song he joked with the crowd and said “We’re going to have a lot of fun tonight! And by fun, I mean singing depressing songs for an hour!”. Lewis Capaldi has always been very open with fans about his anxiety and tourettes, by doing so he has really endeared himself to fans across the world, that along with his beautiful voice and powerful voice it’s impossible not to love him.
As the show continued he played one of his most popular songs “Before You Go” I loved that he put this song in the beginning of the setlist as it really gave the crowd a great opportunity to interact with him. And as was aforementioned earlier, this was Em Beihold’s last show so he brought her on stage to sing it as a duet. He ended the night singing another fan favorite called “Someone You Loved” and I know that fans were sad to see him go once the show was over.
While he joked about his music being depressing, fans were beaming as they left the UCCU Center Sunday night. No doubt excited for and anticipating his return to Utah.
