Track Review: Something’s Gotta Give – All Time Low

This morning, emo pop outfit All Time Low premiered the first song from their upcoming album Future Hearts, “Something’s Gotta Give”, on BBC Radio 1 to the utmost delight of those of us who never really got over 2008.

2015 is bound to be a big year for emo pop and pop punk, with confirmed album release dates from Fall Out Boy, Twenty One Pilots, and now All Time Low. The group announced that their sixth studio album, Future Hearts, will be released at the end of March. On the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw, front man Alex Gaskarth and drummer Rian Dawson premiered the first track off the album, “Something’s Gotta Give”, and talked to Grimshaw about their upcoming UK arena tour as well as the upcoming album.

“Something’s Gotta Give” is the first new material All Time Low has released since the extended version of Don’t Panic came out in 2013, and it does not disappoint. Over the course of their past five studio albums, the band has managed to maintain a pretty consistent sound, and the new track doesn’t stray far from it. While it’s always good to hear bands experimenting with new stuff and redefining themselves, it doesn’t always turn out right. So, while “Something’s Gotta Give” seems like a bit of a safe play, it’s still a really good safe play. The music and lyrics have a tight blend, and it follows a typical All Time Low formula of being instrumentally upbeat with stylistically emo lyrics. Overall, it’s a great start to what’s bound to be a great album, and seeing as it’s still a few months out, All Time Low has plenty of time to surprise us.
