I had the opportunity to talk to the guys in the indie-punk band, Nine Volt Heart, from Yorkshire. Their latest release, The Miracle Kids, has received some positive attention, and there’s a reason why. Check it out as we talk about inspirations, the release and reception of their album, fear, and so much more!
Thank you guys for taking the time to talk to us! How are you doing?
We’re well thanks guys!
You released a new album, The Miracle Kids, on April 19th, what can you tell us about that?
The release went really well. We’re a really small band so we weren’t expecting much from it, but the release show we played that night was the best gig of all our lives and everything was really cool about it. We’re really proud of the album itself and we feel like a different band now that it’s finally out.
What are the similarities and differences between this album and your previous releases?
I feel like this is a more mature release. Concepts are way clearer lyrically, musically we’re a lot tighter as a band, the songwriting has gotten stronger and the production is better. It stands stronger as a concept album than What We Came For did, which was more a bunch of different concepts thrown together as opposed to a solid single idea.
What are your plans now that the album is out?
Just to keep playing gigs and playing gigs and playing gigs. We’re demoing new stuff now, and we really wanna start playing outside of our home county and get around more of the country.
How was the reception to your release?
It was really cool, the release show was way more packed than we were expecting and people have responded to the album really well which feels awesome.
What’s your biggest fear?
I think collectively it’s spiders.
What are some of your biggest musical inspirations?
We’re all really into loads of different things, but collectively I think this band comes a lot from bands like My Chem, Twin Atlantic, Biffy, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Blur, Queen, Sex Pistols…
What gear are you currently using?
Alex plays a Pearl kit, Ed uses a Fender Jazz bass, Paul’s main guitar is a ESP Ltd Les Paul, and my main guitar is a Fender Tele.
I see that you guys have recently been nominated for a couple things and are in some competitions, can you tell us some more about that?
It was awesome to be nominated for the Yorkshire Gig Guide awards! Voting’s over now, we’re just waiting to see if we made the top 5 in our category. Felt awesome to know we’d been nominated for that. We’re also in the Futuresound competition 2014 to play Reading + Leeds which is absolutely INSANE. We started out this band in 2011, our first decent gig in was in 2012 and we were playing pop punk covers and had like two songs – and now we’re in a competition to play reading + leeds. It feels so cool, like we’ve come that far and people are kinda taking us seriously now.
