This Day In Music History: June 8th, 2004 – My Chemical Romance releases ‘Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge’

Selling over 3 million copies in the USA alone, My Chemical Romance’s sophomore album Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge was the band’s initial mainstream breakout record. Containing massive singles like “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)”, “Helena”, and the iconic “The Ghost Of You”, it saw the band expanding their growing songwriting ambitions and Gerard Way improving his vocal abilities, into an album that struck a chord with millions of fans, young and old, alike.

The album, which was released on June 8th, 2004, remains a relevant cultural touchtone, even after the band’s breakup (and subsequent reunification). Remember when “Helena” was a FUSE TV music video staple? A simpler time. Still sounds fresh to this day, as well. There were few bands in the scene around this time period that experienced the kind of explosion that My Chemical Romance did between albums #1 and #2.
