Interview: Bad Omens get personal, discuss musical diversity

Given the state of the alternative music scene in 2016, perhaps it’s not unsurprising that a band like Bad Omens is already experiencing the kind of success that many established bands would kill for. Opening massive tours only a couple years after forming? Check. Racking up hundreds of thousands of views on their stylish, cinematic music videos? Check. Seemingly gaining a full head of steam with every passing tour date? Check. And like their peers in Bring Me The Horizon (the comparisons to the band are endless – but they touch on those in the interview below), they balance melodic sensibilities with strong songwriting and emotional vulnerabilities – the kind that comes from broken relationships, life-changing events, and general bad…omens. Okay, that’s enough.

It’s also exciting to me to see a band like this opening tours, because I can firmly say this – Bad Omens is going to be headlining the kind of venues that they’re playing now in the next 5 years. There’s a sense of relatable honesty in the lyrics the band writes that’s most easy to connect to, as well as not being afraid to diversify their sound and toy with the preconceived conventions of what an alt-metal/metalcore band should sound like in 2016. It’s because of this identity they’ve created (and other reasons – the band is hands on in every part of social media, digital marketing, and more) for themselves that easily cements them as a band to watch out for right now.

I had the opportunity to interview the band in Tampa very recently. Tune in for the full audio interview below, where we discuss a host of different things, like musical diversity, treating your band like a business, and much more. Special thanks to Noah Sebastian and Nick of Bad Omens for giving us lots of their valuable time. You can also check out a full photo gallery of the tour after the jump.
