In The Spotlight: Post-hardcore newcomers Dream State stun on breakout EP, “Recovery”

South Wales alternative rock/post-hardcore newcomers Dream State are, to be perfectly honest, one of the brightest new bands we’ve found in a while. Breakout single “White Lies” was the band’s initial scene breakout, but they’ve followed it up with a solid debut EP on Recovery. While lying somewhere between alternative rock and more metallic-oriented post-hardcore, Dream State’s sound is relentless, melodic, and most of all, evocative.

Though just 5 tracks long, Recovery dabbles in dynamic styles and genres that display impressive diversity for such a young band. Dream State could easily fit on just about any lineup – from heavy ones to more pop-oriented fare – and it’s clear this isn’t a ploy just for mainstream attention. It’s on “In This Hell” where this is most observed, with an explosive, emotive chorus that is genuinely shocking upon first listen.

What’s stunning about this band is just how talented they are musically. The 5-piece creates ample room for melody and space to breathe, and comparisons can be drawn to bands as diverse as Bring Me The Horizon, In This Moment, You Me At Six, Paramore, Alexisonfire, and Too Close To Touch. Certainly, that’s great company to be in.

Where Dream State go in the future is of great interest. Their present, in any case, is very bright.
