Disturbed’s “Down With The Sickness” sees huge surge in sales due to the coronavirus outbreak

Can you feel it? It goes without saying that the coronavirus outbreak has essentially crippled the music and arts industry. Shows, tours, and even major worldwide festivals like Download have been scrapped because of social distancing measures, and while some countries are clearly taking more serious measures than others, the vast majority of musicians are in a bad spot. Some bands, like Code Orange, have turned to livestreaming shows online in innovative ways – while some of the old guard of rock and metal are somehow benefiting from the outbreak.

Disturbed is one such band experiencing a surge in streams, and if you put two and two together, you can probably guess which song is experiencing a surge in streams and sales. Yeah, it’s arguably their biggest hit to date (unless you count their cover of “The Sound Of Silence”) in “Down With The Sickness”. The song, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is scheduled to be performed as part of the band’s The Sickness 20th anniversary tour later this year. Fingers crossed for that one.

While the song recently reached the 330 million stream mark on Spotify, it saw a 3% increase in streams late last month, reaching over 2 million streams in a week as well. Of course, as Billboard reported recently, Disturbed’s not the only one to benefit from your friend’s coronavirus playlist. Other songs from the likes of The Knack (“My Sharona”) and Gloria Gaynor have also experienced a surge in listeners, so perhaps the time is now to get your “ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah” on.
