Altar Of Plagues Is The Perfect Soundtrack To A Cold Winter

Altar-of-Plagues

Though they may be on the dreaded “indefinite hiatus”, Ireland’s Altar Of Plagues are frighteningly good at conjuring the metaphorical “soundtrack to the apocalypse”. But what makes the band so special, and so good at what they do?

If this really is the last we hear from Altar Of Plagues, that would obviously be disappointing for many fans. But through 3 full-length albums and a handful of EP’s, the band truly mastered the post-black metal sound. There’s only a few bands who can pull off this sort of thing well – you could argue that Deafheaven and Altar Of Plagues are two of the best. Why their 2013 masterwork Teethed Glory and Injury works so well is because it drops some of the more obvious black metal influences, adds more ambient and post-metal influences, and throws it all in a melting pot of an album that’s as harrowing as it is thought-provoking.

It’s not easy listening. But its cold soundscapes and tortured screams are evened out by intense electronic landscapes and ambient interludes. Especially if you like your weather below freezing, so too will this be the perfect soundtrack to winter.
