Album Review: Ghost Key – “If I Don’t Make It”

Easily an overlooked band in the scene, Ghost Key has just released their first full length album and with past releases a standard has been built up for this group and with this album they have met expectations and even more. Stay tuned for our thoughts of this melodic hardcore record.

Ghost Key is a melodic hardcore band from Illinois. They are signed to Invogue Records and have two EPs under their belt. An album was obviously on the horizon and with this one released fans were curious if they could keep the sound that made their EPs so good. Well I have an answer, yes. They took their sound from the EPs and made it better and the effort pretty much made perfection. The sound this album features I feel is honestly the audio description of who Ghost Key is. The emotion is there, the instrumental backings hit hard, and oh yeah there is no filler. Now the album is ten songs and runs at a short thirty four minutes but we promise it doesn’t let up for a second. Ten solid tracks that never leave you bored. It’s very hard to find fault in this release.

If I had to pick my three favorite songs from the record it’d go like this: Ache, Solstice, and Downpour. All tracks are solid but those three are the most memorable in my opinion. Being a long time fan of the genre this release was actually very hyped and once delivered I am so satisfied. What may be the best release of this year so far Ghost Key honestly deserves to be bigger than they are. With their upcoming tour with Hail The Sun, Dayseeker, and Silent Planet they are sure to turn some heads and gain some new fans.

Verdict: To be the bands first full length effort it was not a let down in any aspect. The production value is awesome and the album as a whole keeps the listener entertained. For fans of melodic hardcore this album and band is a must. I have no problem giving this release a 5/5.
