We’ll keep this (relatively) short and sweet. 2019 was a fantastic year for music, from old favorites putting out solid records (Tool, Slipknot, Norma Jean) to plenty of great tunes from fresh blood in the scene (Spotlights, Pine). Needless to say, there’s a lot of competition for our annual top albums of the year list. And while there’s quite a few releases this year that attempt to emulate the influences of Deftones and other alt-metal bands while still unfortunately coming across as one-dimensional, there’s also a number of bands that were successful at exploring that kind of territory – or even breaking beyond it to create something truly special and even life-affirming.
You might be asking, though – why 106 albums? Why not 20 albums, or even 10, or maybe 50? It’s simple – we just wanted to be different. Why limit yourself to one or two genres of music? There’s beauty to be found all over, so read on and discover something new – or something you might have missed.
Michigan post-hardcore act Adventurer has released their newest single, “Vicious Circle” with Esque Records today. I had the pleasure of getting to interview the band for this release, asking them about this new release, their inspirations, and what’s in store for the future.
Almost three decades after its release as arguably the most iconic song of the 90’s (though that’s obviously up for debate), Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” has entered rarified territory as one of Youtube’s highest-viewed rock videos. The track, released in 1991 off their multi-platinum album Nevermind, reached a number that only a select few musicians in general ever do. At least on Youtube, anyway.
French progressive metalcore band Novelists FR have emerged as one of the more notable bands of the genre in the last few years. With 2 solid full-lengths under their belt and a couple great singles released this year (“Head Rush”, especially), the young band are really seeking to make their mark on the music scene with their upcoming third full-length, C’est La Vie. Now, the band has released the title track – and third song overall – from the upcoming record, which you can stream below.
